Plagiarism is the act of stealing and passing off another person's work as your own. It is a form of cheating and it is unethical because it involves misrepresenting the source of the information or idea.

It can be intentional or unintentional. Plagiarism may not be intended to deceive the reader, but it does deceive the reader in some way.

You can avoid plagiarism if you follow these steps:

1) Write your own paper. Do not copy sentences from websites or other sources without citing them as quotations (with quotation marks and parenthetical citations). Do not include more than one paragraph from any source without citing it as a quotation (with quotation marks and parenthetical citations).

2) Use quotations sparingly, only when quoting directly from sources. Never use a direct quotation longer than four lines without putting it into your own words; even then, provide the exact source (and note how many lines are quoted). Be careful not to quote too much; excessive quoting can make your writing sound artificial or stilted. It can also give readers the impression that you don't know enough about what you're talking about!

3) If you use someone else's ideas in your paper, give credit.

Tools to check Plagiarism

Plagiarism checkers are tools that help you detect copied content in your papers. They work by comparing your text against a database of known sources and telling you if there are any matches.

There are a number of different tools available for checking for plagiarism. Here are some of the most popular:

Copyscape (free)

Copyscape is one of the most popular plagiarism checkers out there, with over 15 million documents indexed. It searches the web for copies of your paper, so it's best used after you've written and edited the document. You can also use it to search for other people's work that might be relevant to your topic or research question.

Turnitin (paid)

Turnitin also has a free version (with limited functionality), but its main product is a paid service that allows instructors to check their students' papers against millions of sources on the web. Turnitin also allows instructors to create custom assignments and automatically grade them using this software.

Plagiarism-Checking Software

Plagiarism detection software is the best way to determine whether or not a paper or essay is plagiarized. For example, if you use TurnItIn and your paper tests positive for plagiarism on their system, you could receive an F in the class. However, this tool can only be used for written assignments and not for visual artwork.

Online Plagiarism Checker

An online plagiarism checker is a search engine that will find instances of copied content on the web. You can also use online plagiarism checker to find similar content in your own work. This tool is useful when you are trying to determine how much work another person has put into their project and if they have copied any content from your own work.
